Best Heath Insurance Choices for your Family
What is the Best Health Insurance Plan?
Whatever problems we have with health insurance in the US, there are still a lot of choices on the market. If you need to select a major medical plan for your family, or just for yourself, a good choice can leave you satisfied. A poor choice can cause a lot of worry and problems.
The Types of Medical Plans
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) – This is probably the most popular type on the market. You have a list of preferred medical providers that is provided by your insurer. If you use these providers, you get the highest level of coverage. But you can still be covered if you go outside the network.
A Health Maintenance Organization, or HMO, is somewhat similar to a PPO. You have a network list of medical providers, but you must use them to be covered at all. Though an HMO is not as flexible as a PPO, it can provide very good coverage and be simple to use. You may be happy with this choice if you live in an area where there is a wide selection of nework providers.
Even though both HMO and PPO plans have networks, the insurer will probably allow for some coverage exceptions in the event of an emergency or urgent care need. If you cannot find a certain type of provider in the network, you may also get permission to use another provider. You just need to understand how the plan works before you need the service.
HSA (Health Savings Account) with a High Deductible Major Medical Plan – This type of coverage is getting more popular with people who want more control over their health expenses. You are allows to make pre-tax contributions, within IRS limits, to a savings account. This account may even pay interest and come with a debit card you can use at the doctor’s office!
You can even roll over your HSA contributions to use later. And if you have money in your account when you hit retirement age, you can keep it!
Be aware that not everybody likes this type of health plan because they have not done a good job of funding the account. Since the actual major medical plan has a high deductible, and since this money has to come from somewhere, these costs must be paid somehow.
Nobody can make a general statement about medical plans. There is not one right plan for everybody. Your own choice will depend upon many factors, including your needs, budget, and the way you like to plan.
